Milling a
Pine Tree
For Lumber
Sourcing local wood is important to us. We source our wood from local sawmills, selling wood from trees grown, milled and kiln dried in western North Carolina. Recently, a personal love of wood, and understanding wood, has led to us to explore producing our own lumber.
When a large Eastern White Pine needed to be felled in the area because it was impinging on a roadway we jumped on the opportunity to mill some beautiful lumber out of the magnificent tree. We felled the tree, cut it into sections, and hauled it to a friend's sawmill. Then, with the help of many hands we managed to turn the tree into some gorgeous boards. Afterwards we stacked it in a neat lumber stack, with stickers and space between the boars for airflow.
Now, we will let the lumber cure for at least 6 months, possibly more, until it has dried out more. At that point it’ll be ready to use.
While most of our work requires kiln dried lumber, since otherwise it will warp, especially in our humid climate, we are excited to find a project that will put these pine boards to good use.
