In the movie, Lily Chou Chou is the stage name of a prominent singer and solo musician. She was born on December 8th, 1980, at 10:50 PM, the exact same time when John Lennon, a member of the Beatles, was murdered. She originally provided the vocals for the band Philia that broke up. Lily Chou Chou later wrote lyrics for another band named Yellow Fellows. This band debuted with a single called "Addiction" on February 21, 1995, and reached number one on the single charts. She later seems to have debuted as a solo artist and released 2 albums, Erotic and Kokyū, during her career. Her fanbase is mainly composed of younger people who look up to her at times, sort of like a cult leader. Additionally, her cult fanbase, as well as her, has coined the term "ether". Lily describes the ether as a fabric of the universe, assigning colors to different types of ether. Personally, I think the ether is best described as the feelings her music gives you. 14-year-old Yuichi Hasumi also finds the "ether" in her music. He runs a forum where fans discuss anything about Lily Chou Chou. Meanwhile, he watches his life spiral downwards. He had a lively friend group and had a lot of fun experiences with them. However, one of his closest, Hoshino, suddenly turns into a delinquent and becomes the leader of a gang after a near-death experience. Yuichi is pushed around by Hoshino and his gang. He becomes even less antisocial, loses his friends, and watches those close to him suffer due to Hoshino. He escapes to the ether and uses Lily's music as his comfort.
